THE IMPORTANCE OF A Parking Brake Shoe Replacement
What are parking brake shoes and how do they work?
Parking brake shoes are components of a rear disc braking system. Sometimes referred to as “emergency” brake shoes, they are designed to assist the transmission to hold your vehicle in place when you are parked, especially when on an incline. The parking brake is a mechanical device that is completely separate from the hydraulic braking system. If a vehicle has rear disc brakes, the inside of the brake caliper serves as a drum brake. The brake shoes are engaged by a cable and lever (or separate pedal) from inside the passenger compartment.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Signs that parking brake shoes need to be replaced
Parking brake shoes are often addressed when the rear brake pads and rotors are being serviced. You can sense that the rear parking brake shoes need to be replaced if any of the following conditions are present:
Your vehicle fails to remain still with the parking brake lever or pedal fully engaged
Upon starting your vehicle after releasing the parking brake, you notice that the shifter is difficult to move out of park
The parking brake lever or pedal travel farther than normal
The lever or pedal fails to return to its normal position when released

FREQUENCY OF INSPECTION
How does a technician perform A Parking Brake Shoe Replacement ?
To replace the parking brake shoes, a technician must first safely lift and support your vehicle and remove the rear wheels and tires. Once that is complete, the technician will typically follow these steps (depending on the vehicle make and model):
Remove and suspend the brake caliper
Remove the brake pads and caliper bracket to access the rotor
Remove the brake rotor
Unhook and remove the return spring and remove the shoe retainers
Set aside the brake adjuster
Disconnect the parking brake cable from the rear shoe
Install the new shoes, retainers, adjuster, and spring
Replace the rotor, caliper bracket, brake pads, and caliper
Adjust the parking brake tensioner
Reinstall the wheels and tires and lower the vehicle to the ground
Test drive the vehicle to verify the repair and finish adjusting the parking brake
Other Questions Customers Ask
Can you drive without parking brake shoes?
If the parking brake does not fully engage, it may be possible to still drive your vehicle. However, if the cable is broken and the lever or pedal moves too freely - or if it will not disengage - do not drive your vehicle. These conditions can cause significant damage. More importantly, they present a safety hazard when driving.
How hard is it to replace an emergency brake?
The emergency, or parking brakes, on a vehicle with rear disc brakes require that a technician remove the calipers, brake pads, caliper brackets, and rotors just to access the parking brake mechanism. That makes the service a bit more complicated than merely replacing brake pads and other components.
Is a parking brake and an e-brake the same?
The term “parking brake” is often used synonymously with “e-brake” or “emergency brake”. That is because the mechanical parking brake system is separate from the hydraulic braking system that you use to slow and stop your vehicle. The parking brake is used to assist the transmission to hold your vehicle in place when not in use. But, because it relies on a system of cables and levers, rather than the hydraulics, if your brakes fail, the parking/emergency brake can offer some benefit to bring your vehicle to a stop.
